Overview

Wilhelm Steinitz is universally recognized as the founder of modern chess. Before Steinitz, chess was dominated by speculative sacrifices and direct attacks. He introduced a revolutionary understanding of positional play, defense, and gradual accumulation of advantages.

Steinitz officially became the first World Chess Champion in 1886 after defeating Johannes Zukertort. His ideas were initially controversial, but they later became the foundation upon which all modern chess strategy is built.

World Championship highlights

  • Defeated Johannes Zukertort in 1886 to become the first official World Chess Champion.
  • Successfully defended the title against challengers including Mikhail Chigorin.
  • Held the World Championship title for eight years.
  • Lost the crown to Emanuel Lasker in 1894, passing the torch to the next era.

Playing style & legacy

Steinitz’s style emphasized strong pawn structures, king safety, and the importance of defense. He demonstrated that attacks must be prepared and justified by the position, rather than launched impulsively.

His theories laid the groundwork for every World Champion who followed. Steinitz’s ideas influenced Lasker, Capablanca, and beyond, making him arguably the most important figure in chess history despite playing in the game’s earliest era.
